As expected Spike Jonze delivers a completely beautiful film that somehow manages to make an emotionally compelling story about robot love. The film had a very similar feel to Where the Wild Things Are. He managed to create a world were robots seem plausible without weighing the story down with robotics laws or techno babble. He gives us just as much as we need to really identify with this story. This was by far my favorite film of the festival. I think it is now safe to say that I am offically a Spike Jonze fanboy.

Uncommon Objects

In our wanderings around Austin, we found an amazing antique store called Uncommon Objects. They had an entire section devoted to strange Masonic banners and signs. I cannot describe how much I love the design of these things. So if you want to buy me a birthday present, get me a Masonic banner.

Also, I would like a taxidermied fox.

The Awards

I definitely did not expect to win anything in the awards, but for some reason I was completely nervous the whole time. The runner up was a pretty amazing title sequence to a film about an artist who made pictures out of rocks and objects on a huge scale layed down on the ground. Appropriately, the title sequence was a pretty incredible sequence of titles cut into huge fields of grass and filmed from a helicopter. A truly incredible piece of work. The main winner was Zombieland.
I ended up going and talking to the judges afterwards and met Karen Fong of Imaginary Forces, as well as the founder of Art of the Title and the owner of Super Shiny Objects. They all asked for my card to see more of my work, which is pretty cool. The fact that my sequence was not actually accompanied by a film, definitely put me out of the running, which is understandable because that really is the whole point of a title sequence.

Overall, the night was great. I met a ton of people and had a wonderful time. Win-Win-Win.

Daily Wrap Up

Things I did today:

- Listened to a panel on poster design.
- Bought a sweet SXSW screenprinted poster.
- Listened to a panel on title design with a lady from Pixar and another from Imaginary Forces.
- Ate some delicious $2 tacos.
- Got a some free 15 year old from the Macallan table.
- Watched a screening of my title sequence, and met the guys who worked on Bored to Death and Thank You For Smoking.

Overall a really great day. We are looking forward to watching tons of films tomorrow. There are so many things goin on at once here, it is definitely hard to take it all in. Hopefully, I will be able to upload some reviews.
